Theft is a major concern .....
Choose a Home Security Device Based on Function

When it comes to securing your family and your property, no matter the configuration of your house, there is a home security device that can do the job efficiently. Whether it is to guard against break-ins, notification of window breakage, fire or medical emergency there is a home security device that can be hooked up that will be perfect.

The most common home security device is magnetic switches for the door; these have two parts that attach to the door and the doorframe. When the door is closed, the magnet attached to the door keeps the switch in an open position but when the door opens, the magnet is no longer close enough to the switch to keep it open and the alarm is triggered. These are available in surface mount or hidden, which are drilled in to the frame and the door, and leave no visible sign of the contact' s presence.

Infrared lights are another popular home security device, which covers open areas in the home. These are two-part units with one emitting a thin beam of ultraviolet light to a receiving unit. When the beam of light is broken, the alarm is set off. This type of home security device is best if there are no pets in the house as roaming animals have been known to trigger an alarm. As well, if the light beam is placed high enough to be out of the pet' s reach, it is possible someone could stoop low enough to get under it.

Scare Tactics of Light and Sound

While many believe a silent alarm is best and wants the authorities or security companies notified in case of break in, others just want the intruder to go away. Shrill alarms and bright light can often achieve the desired effect. A home security device can be configured to set of a loud siren, usually about 200 decibels, as well as trigger turning on bright spotlights, wherever the homeowner chooses.

The main part of the home security device which is the control panel, should be kept out of sight. On some buyer-installed models if the panel is damaged, the alarm will not work. Since most alarms have a delay to allow time to turn it off when you enter the house, if someone breaks in, setting off the alarm, a hard tool through the front of the panel could render the alarm useless. Not only did the house get robbed, but the alarm has to be replaced.
